Cooking rule of thumb number one: Always use fresh ingredients.
We’ve all done it, purchased that beautiful tomato at the grocery store, only to cut into it at home and find it dry and mealy. Getting to know your food is the first step in getting to know your way around the kitchen. Knowing what foods are in season, and when, will make all the difference when it comes to making your next meal delicious.
Whether you live in the city, the suburbs, or the country, an excellent Wisconsin farmers market is not too far from you. In addition to locally grown produce, you can find jams, jellies, artisan cheeses, honey and maple products, drinks, food demonstrations and live entertainment.
Your local farmers market lets you see, smell, touch and taste the food that has just been pulled from the earth, picked from a tree, or plucked from a vine. Chefs from all over the country are buying local. Nothing makes a soup, a salad, or an entrée come to life like homegrown tomatoes, or greens, or even chickens. It’s a great way to support you community, and an even better stay on the healthy eating road.
It’s one of the finest traditions Wisconsin has to offer. Why not make a trip to the farmers market in your area, one of your traditions?
Most farmer’s markets are open May – October, with some opening in April and staying open as late as November. Â Off season or off weather? Try Milwaukee Public Market!
